- you can try ActiveMQ 5.3.0 as it improves broker scalability in great deal. Take a look here for some more details http://www.nighttale.net/activemq/python-messaging-activemq-and-rabbitmq.html#scalability

- Not sure if you checked ActiveMQ XMPP support http://activemq.apache.org/xmpp.html - you can use for debugging
